Power connectors tout high-frequency attenuation

Anderson Power Products (APP) and Schaffner EMC have partnered to develop a new series of high-frequency filtered power connectors. The new ACARA series is said to provide superior high-frequency attenuation to prevent radio frequency emission, thus protecting sensitive devices including computers as well as switching and cellular equipment.

Featuring an unique integral feed-though capacitor construction, the male-filtered connector offers extremely low series inductance, ensuring that the self-resonant frequency is very high, and provides high EMC performance beyond 10GHz. The company notes that as the frequency increases, the impedance of the feed-through capacitor decreases exponentially.

To ensure user safety, the plastic housing of the female power connector is polarized to the male connector to prevent the installer from reversing polarity. Mating of similar ACARA connectors with different capacitance values or operating voltages can be avoided using the optional 6-position key, said the company. The power connector also incorporates a positive latch and wire strain relief for greater safety. The positive latch prevents accidental unmating, but allows immediate power disconnect for emergency service or repair. The wire strain relief eliminates creep of the wire insulation jacket which can expose bare conductors and result in electrical shock.

The filtered connectors are available in 65-, 100-, 150- and 250A ratings and in capacitance values ranging from 100nF to 2,100nF. The products meet all applicable requirements of UL and EN.

The company said typical installations using common feed-through capacitors and connectors require up to three times the number of components and three times the installation labor than the new ACARA solution. The 65A/100nF connector is priced at $40+ per mated pair, while the 150A/250nF device is priced at $52+ per mated pair, both in quantities of 1,000+. Delivery is four to six weeks.
