TI sticks with Synopsys for 65nm, 45nm nodes

Texas Instruments Inc. has decided to extend its use of design-for-manufacturing EDA tools from Synopsys Inc. to the 65nm manufacturing process node and has selected two Synopsys technology CAD tools for use at the 45nm node, Synopsys said.

TI has extended its use of Synopsys' Alternating Aperture phase shift mask (AA-PSM) and Proteus optical proximity correction (opc) EDA tools for the 65nm node, Synopsys said. TI has also adopted the Hercules Physical Verification Suite and the Floops process simulator and the Dessis device simulator as the Technology CAD (TCAD) platform for use with future 45nm manufacturing processes.

"Synopsys' mask synthesis solutions offer the critical dimension accuracy and near-linear scalability that we require to meet the complex data processing needs for our advanced 65nm and 45nm technology," said Mark Mason, TI's resolution enhancement technology manager, in a statement issued by Synopsys.

Hercules PVS includes features to handle 45nm DRC rules along with distributed processing technology, which scales well over many CPUs. Hercules PVS is the engine for a number of Synopsys manufacturing applications and other DFM products such as AA-PSM and SiVL Lithography Rule Checking, Synopsys said. For development of high-performance transistors at 45-nm and below, TI has selected Synopsys' Floops and Dessis as the TCAD simulation platform. Floops and Dessis include both 2D and 3D simulation capabilities.

"After careful evaluation, we have selected Floops and Dessis for the 45nm technology node. We believe these tools will enable us to maintain our leadership into 45nm CMOS. We look forward to a continuing relationship with Synopsys to maintain Floops and Dessis at the forefront of technology," said Dennis Buss, TI's vice president of silicon technology development, in the same statement.

Synopsys took control of Floops and Dessis when it acquired Swiss TCAD specialist ISE in October 2004 for about $95 million.
