Seiko Epson Corp.'s semiconductor unit said it will license design know-how from Sarnoff Europe for use in its LCD driver ICs.

Seiko and Sarnoff Europe, a branch of Sarnoff Corp., said that Seiko will license Sarnoff's design IP portfolio for on-chip electrostatic discharge. The Japanese company's Epson Semiconductor Operations Division will use the "TakeCharge" technology in its high-voltage CMOS chips used as drivers in its LCD panels.

"We expect to achieve a substantial reduction of the on-chip I/O area, and the first-time-right feature means we can reduce our costs by saving time in engineering, and eliminating the need for additional masks," Epson's Yoshiyuki Miyayama said in a statement.
