The Industrial Technology Research Institute's Optoelectronics & Systems Laboratories (OESL) in Taiwan has developed an LED that can operate under 110V AC. The AC LED is suitable for industrial and lighting applications.

The traditional LED consumes too much power and generates too much heat in arrays needed for large panels, which can extend to many meters in each dimensions for outdoor displays.

OESL combined optoelectronics and more mature microelectronics processing steps. The light output per watt of the AC LED is more than 50 percent higher than that of an ordinary LED. OESL has demonstrated blue and green AC LEDs, and other colors and high power types will follow. Patents have filed been filed with various countries. OESL says it is ready to license out relevant technology.

In another development, OESL launched Taiwan's first self-developed blue-laser DVD pick-up head (PUH). The blue-laser DVD PUH complies with the HD-DVD standard, the next-generation blue-laser DVD format developed by Toshiba and NEC.

The blue-laser DVD PUH will be initially used in read-only DVD drives, according to OES Deputy Director Der-ray Huang. Huang says the OESL will offer the PUH to interested local IC design houses and makers of optical discs for developing and testing of blue-laser DVD products. He adds that blue-laser DVD products are expected to be commercialized in two to three years.
