LED backlights will not likely be adopted in large-sized LCDs until 2007 when the price gap between LEDs and CCFLs lowers, according to LED manufacturer Lite-On Technology Corp.

Currently, prices of white LEDs for large-sized panel backlight modules are twice that of CCFLs. Lite-On began making LEDs for LCD panel backlights this year, with products for 15in LCD panels still in the design-in stage. The company projects that its shipment for high- luminance LED products will increase from 60 percent to 70 percent this year. Seventy percent of its LED shipment is applied in mobile handsets, with LCD panels and camera flashes each sharing 15 percent.

Meanwhile, Everlight Electronics Co. Ltd also believes that application of LEDs in large-sized panels will widen when prices of high-power LEDs decline. Everlight is slated to start shipping its high-luminance LEDs for small-sized LCD panels and camera flashes next month. The products are expected to take up 30 percent of the company's total LED shipment this year.
