Intersil PWM synchronous buck controller cuts component count

The new single phase PWM synchronous buck controller from Intersil Corp. requires fewer external components than competing products which results in a smaller implementation area and lower manufacturing cost.

Targeted at Mobile Graphical Processing Units (gpus), the ISL6269 controller includes onboard MOSFET drivers, internal 5V LDO, integrated boot diode and a PWM audio frequency filter. Through this integration, Intersil said, the ISL6269 provides a flexible power solution that is easy to implement for GPUs in notebook PCs and other battery operated devices.

The ISL6269 features the company's Robust Ripple Regulator (R3) technology to provide superior dynamic response to input voltage and output load transients. The R3 technology combines the best features of fixed-frequency PWM and hysteretic PWM while eliminating many of the associated shortcomings, the press release said. With this technology, the ISL6269 is able to provide 1 percent regulation accuracy from -10°C to 100°C. A resistor divider is used to program the output voltage setpoint. The ISL6269 can also be configured to operate in forced-continuous-conduction-mode (FCCM) or in diode-emulation-mode (DEM), which improves light load efficiency.

Additional features of the new PWM synchronous buck controller include over-current protection, short-circuit protection, over-voltage protection, thermal protection programmable frequency, and power good output. The ISL6269 has a 1.5ms digital soft start that can be started at a pre-biased output voltage, while its PWM frequency is programmed using a single resistor and can be changed on the fly. Programmable PWM frequency is from 200KHz to 600KHz, input voltage range is from 7V to 25V, output voltage range is from 0.6V to 3.3V, and output load range is from 0 to 25A.

The ISL6269 is housed in a 4-by-4mm QFN package with a suggested resale price of $2.50 in 1,000-unit quantities. Pb-free versions are also available.
