Handheld spectrum analyzer gets cdma2000 1xEV-DO options

New options for handheld communications analyzerTest-and-measurement house Anritsu Co. is debuting three cdma2000 1xEV-DO options for its existing Cell Master MT8212B handheld communications analyzer. These options expand the handheld's analysis capability to include RF, demodulation, and OTA (over-the-air) measurements on cdma2000 1xEV-DO signals.

cdma2000 1xEV-DO is an evolution of cdma2000. It's a 3G (third generation) standard for fixed, portable, and mobile applications. cdma2000 1xEV-DO is data optimized, providing a peak data rate of 2.4Mbps. Initially deployed in 2002, there are an estimated 12 million 1xEV-DO users today, with many more networks expected.

A multi-function portable
A word about the LCD-equipped battery powered MT8212B itself. Melding a cable and antenna analyzer, spectrum analyzer, and power meter into a single instrument that weighs less than five pounds, it lets you perform many verification tests and signal analyseswith only a few keystrokes.

The MT8212B was designed to conduct diagnostics and verification of base station RF cable feed-line and antenna systems, do OTA signal identification, and perform interference analysis. It can also handle power measurement, and perform voice/data traffic error and fault location for T1 and E1 circuits.

The MT8212B's measurement capability includes return loss, VSWR (voltage standing-wave ratio), cable loss, distance-to-fault, signal identification, interference analysis, channel power, and ACPR (adjacent channel power ratio). It can also make field strength, transmitter power, CDP (code domain power), and burst power measurements.

The instrument can also make 2-port measurements, measure multiple transmitted signals, and do T1 and E1 measurements. Patented RF interference rejection ensure repeatable measurements in the presence of high RF fields, too. Finally, the unit includes PC data analysis software that lets you assess system trends, problems, and performance. The software also supports report generation.

Expanding capability
For its part, the new 1xEV-DO RF measurement option expands the Cell Master MT8212B's measurement capability to include pilot/MAC (media access control) power, pilot power, frequency error, measured bandwidth, idle/active activity, and idle/active data on cdma2000 1xEV-DO signals. An RF measurement screen displays received signals in frequency domain and time domain formats, for both active or idle activity of a signal.

With the 1xEV-DO demodulator option, the Cell Master demodulates cdma2000 1xEV-DO signals and displays code domain power as MAC code power or data power.

MAC code power measurement displays are pilot/MAC power, noise floor, Rho overall 1, Rho overall 2, Rho pilot, data modulation type, channel power, frequency error, EVM (error vector magnitude), pilot time tolerance (tau), and carried feedthrough.

Data code power measurement shows both the I and Q (in-phase and quadrature) channels.

Built-in GPS
The 1xEV-DO demodulator and a built-in GPS (Global Positioning System) are required for an EvDO (evolution data only) OTA option. The OTA option displays pilot dominance, multi-path power, the three strongest pilots with power, and the two strongest multi-paths relative to the strongest pilot.

In addition to the cdma2000 1xEV-DO options, Anritsu also announces PowerMonitor and bias tee options for the MT8212B. The power monitor gives the Cell Master the ability to measure transmitter power of wireless back-haul networks, up to 50GHz.

Designed directly into the CellMaster, the bias tee is for applications in which both DC and RF signals must be applied to a device under test. An exmaple would be a tower-mounted amplifier, where DC might be fed up the coax cable.

Pricing of the Cell Master base station analyzer starts at a bit less than about $14,000. The 1xEV-DO RF measurements option is $1,250, the 1xEV-DO demodulation option is $3,400, and the 1xEV-DO OTA option is $1,875. Delivery is about eight weeks.
