LED chipmakers in Taiwan are optimistic of the market performance of high-luminance LEDs in the second half of the year despite flat sales last month.

Epistar Corp. registered a sales decline of almost 1 percent in May from NT$273 million ($8.7 million at NT$31.36:$1) in April. However, the company says it expects its shipment of AlGaInP LED chips to continue its upward trend this month, with shipments increasing from 410 million units in April to 480 million units last month. The company also shipped over 40 million high-luminance indium-tin oxide (ITO) LED chips last month.

Formosa Epitaxy Inc. posted 1.8 percent decline in revenues last month to NT$65 million ($2 million). The company expects its high-luminance LED chips of 1,000mcd to 1,200mcd to yield the highest results for sales in the second half of the year.

Arima Optoelectronics Corp., on the other hand, registered at least 7 percent sequential growth in revenues as shipment of AlGaInP LED chips increased. Further, the company says monthly shipment of laser diodes also increased from 1 million units to more than 1.5 million units.
