Revenues and unit shipments of MEMS (MicroElectroMechanical Systems) both rose by 15.2 percent in 2004, according to a report released by EmTech Research, titled "Entering a New Phase of Growth: 2005 MEMS Forecast". EmTech said that sales were fairly even across all device categories, with both sensors and actuators enjoying increased levels of market penetration. But there is change ahead.
"The overall growth of MEMS is anticipated to undergo a fundamental shift," commented Marlene Bourne, VP of research and principal analyst with EmTech Research. "Revenue increases are projected to slow into the single digits over the next five years, even as unit shipments continue to expand at double-digit rates. This is a direct result of the kinds of MEMS devices that are entering the market," Bourne added.
