ADC with 250Msps sample rate

Maxim Integrated Products announced that they have set a new 12-bit sampling-speed standard with the introduction of its MAX1215, a 12bit 250Msps analog-to-digital converter (ADC). At 250Msps, this new ADC has the world's fastest sample rate at the 12bit level, and delivers outstanding dynamic performance over input frequencies as high as 300MHz, said the press release.

The MAX1215 achieves a spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) of 74dBc. It has a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of 66dB at 10MHz which remains flat (within 2dB) for input tones up to 300MHz, and is said to consume 34 percent less power than its closest competitor.

The high-speed, 12-bit ADC runs on a single 1.8V supply. The analog input is designed for either differential or single-ended operation and can be AC or DC coupled. The selectable on-chip, divide-by-2 clock circuit reduces the phase noise of the input clock source. The digital outputs are LVDS compatible, and the data format can be selected as either two's complement or offset binary.

The MAX1215 is available in a 68-pin TQFN-EP package specified for the industrial temperature range (-40C to 85C). An evaluation kit is also available to help shorten design time. Pricing starts at $47.50 (1,000-up, FOB USA).
