First CMOS single-chip RF transceiver for UMTS applications?

The SMARTi 3G transceiver from Infineon Technologies AG is claimed to be the world's first CMOS single-chip RF transceiver specifically developed for Universal Mobile Telecommunications System (UMTS) applications. This new chip supports all six frequency bands for UMTS now specified for operation in different parts of the world, including Europe, Asia, North America and Japan.

With respect to the downlink data capacity specified under HSDPA (High Speed Down-link Packet Access) between base station and mobile device, the SMARTi 3G chip complies with category 8 of the HSDPA specification, featuring up to 7.2Mbps. The data rate of today's UMTS phones without HSDPA accounts for 384Kbps.

"SMARTi 3G completes our comprehensive portfolio of single-chip, CMOS transceivers for advanced mobile phone services," said Stefan Wolff, VP and GM of RF Engine Business Unit at the Communications Business Group of Infineon. "Using our proven 130nm CMOS technology, a robust system architecture with verified core IP hardware blocks, and a common manufacturing base for all our transceiver products, we can successfully address our customer's needs for technology leadership, reduced platform R&D investment and excellent manufacturing flexibility."

The SMARTi 3G is the latest member of Infineon's UMTS transceiver family. It is designed to fulfil the W-CDMA UTRA FDD system requirements for the frequency bands I to VI. Offering the same interfaces as its single band predecessor (SMARTi U), SMARTi 3G is highly compatible with the majority of existing base band solutions.

The new transceiver is manufactured using the company's standard 130nm, CMOS process technology and is packaged in a single PG-WFSGA (Very Very Thin Fine Pitch Semiball Grid Array), green (Pb-free, halogen-free) package measuring 5-by-5mm, with 81 pins and a 0.5mm pitch. Its supply voltage ranges from 2.7V to 3V.

The SMARTi 3G is already available in sample quantities, with volume shipment expected to commence at the beginning of 2006.
