Sony is to close two South Wales manufacturing facilities. The ceasing of CRT manufacturing in Bridgend will result in 400 job losses with a further 250 job losses at the Pencoed TV assembly factory.

A workforce of 300 will be retained at Pencoed to focus on production of circuited boards for flat-screen televisions which are made in Barcelona and broadcast cameras. It will also maintain its logistics and customer support center functions.

In January 300 staff were made redundant at the Bridgend plant which Sony set up in 1973 and at their peak more than 4,000 were employed at its two factories. The Pencoed plant opened in 1992.

Sony has blamed the decision on spiralling consumer demand for flat-screen televisions. Sony is also closing a Spanish CRT manufacturing facility in Barcelona and CRT production in Europe will now be concentrated in Slovakia.
