A research made by the Topology Research Institute (TRI) says Taiwan-based LED suppliers are the major providers for mobile phone applications.

According to Chris Wang, researcher at the Photonics & Semiconductors Research Center at TRI, blue LED chips account for 40 percent of the global market share. Taiwan's global market share of blue LED chips may reach at least 15 percent this year from 8 to 10 percent last year.

TRI also says the Taiwan LED market is expected to register a 20 percent growth year-on-year, although it is significantly lower than last year's growth rate of 37 percent. Researchers say this is likely the result of lower volume shipments for mobile phones this year.

However, Wang says the LED industry is showing signs of slowing down this year. "Market demand for mobile phones has been slowing down and the newly emerging markets--such as car electronics and LED backlights--are not ready yet. Hence, the market lacks hot applications for the growth of the LED industry," he says.

Meanwhile, blue LED chips will still face supply shortage as only a few makers are capable of manufacturing this key component in mobile phones.
