Panel maker Chi Mei Optoelectronics (CMO) plans to boost its capacity for flat panel displays in the next two years by 200 percent. According to CMO, it will set up two facilities apart from ramping up capacity at its existing LCD plant. The company will allot about $638 million to increase monthly capacity from 120,000 units to 180,000 units at its 5.5G plant by the end of 2006.

CMO will also invest about $1.11 billion for a new 5G facility that will manufacture 90,000 panels per month using 1,100-by-1,300mm glass substrates. Construction of the plant is slated to commence in the fourth quarter of 2006.

Further, the company is also building a 7.5G plant that will manufacture panels using 1,950-by-2,250mm glass substrates. Initial monthly capacity is targeted at 30,000 units and mass production is scheduled six months after the start of volume production.
