Type-Z material is extremely achromatic with high transmittance

Murata Mfg Co. Ltd has developed a new material (Type-Z) based on transparent ceramics (LUMICERA), which is extremely achromatic and with high transmittance for short wavelength.

Refractive index of Type-Z is 2.095 at the d line spectrum (587nm), an index for visible light (between 380mm and 780mm), higher than 2.082 for Type-E. The company added that Type-Z has excellent transmittance of light over the entire visual spectrum. It also allows transmittance of short wavelength light slightly below the lower end of visual spectrum, such as i line (365nm), which commercial high refractive index glass would not transmit easily. As with Type-E, Type-Z is environmentally friendly not containing any environmentally hazardous substance, including Pb.

Murata has been developing transparent ceramics having high refractive index, and with no birefringence. As a result, the first ceramic lens in the world was actualized in 2004. While this material (Type-E) has excellent optical characteristics, it has slight yellow tint as seen in highly refractive index glass, limiting the applicable thickness. According to the company, they have been working on solving this problem and eventually developed the Type-Z material.
