DVB-T/USB chip drives digital TV reception for PCs

Pushing for personal computers to evolve as complete media center devices, fabless semiconductor firm DiBcom introduced a highly-integrated low-power IC for digital TV reception in PCs. Terrestrial digital video broadcasting (DVB-T) chip dib7700 has advanced interfaces that accept new low-power silicon tuners.

DIB7700 can be directly connected to USB 2.0, thus allowing single-chip baseband solution for USB 2.0 pen size peripherals, new integrated mini-cards and PCI Express 34/54 form factors.

We have developed a second generation of chipsets extending to PC TV applications in the form of external USB modules to be connected to notebooks, said Philippe Creveuil, GM for Asia-Pacific at DiBcom. He expressed that the chip allows the integration of digital TV solution in notebooks and PCs.

According to Creveuil, previous generation chips allow the reception of digital TV via external devices such as the USB dongle or USB external box. The power consumption of these chips makes it difficult for integrating the solution in laptops where power dissipation issues are important, Creveuil explained.

DIB7700 can be utilized in either single or diversity mode permitting up to 11dB gain (Europe) in portable reception. It features low power consumption, complemented by the low battery drain and heat dissipation.

We have embedded in the chipset the signal processing which is necessary to remove the parasitic effects in digital TV, said Creveuil. Parasitic effects are present in environments where portable mobile devices are utilized. Creveuil added that they have embedded the essential features in a small package at a low cost.

Creveuil asserted that the chip divides by four the power consumption of the digital TV solution, thus making power dissipation aspects and problems easier to solve. This chipset embeds the USB interface, reducing two chipsets to one, Creveuil explained.

Several major PC-makers will push for multimedia PCs and digital TV available from the PC, pushing for the media center type of product. It is a really good timing for us to produce the DiB7700 because several large notebook manufacturers are now thinking or starting to design in the integration of digital TV in their products, affirms Creveuil.

Creveuil conveyed that Asian countries are very fond of TV and TV-on-the-go, and are open to feature-rich electronic devices. He pointed out that Taiwan is a major part of the industry with all its big OEM and ODM players. France-based DiBcom put up an office in Hong Kong. Early DiBcom chips have been equipped by car and mobile phone industry firms because of its reception quality on the move.

Not only that we see a big market in consumer products but we also see a big market in Asia from the design point of view. There are many companies that are willing to develop digital TV design, emphasized Creveuil. DiBcom provides the technology to bring the digital TV to the consumer, he added.

DiBcom also introduced the STK7700 reference design at Computex Taiwan 2005, which can be used by customers to have a fast time-to-market design using DIB7700.

The DIB7700 offers the perfect performance, power consumption and price for this merging market, stated Yannick Levy, president and CEO of DiBcom. Consumers want to have their own mobile solutions, and TV-on-laptop is the last feature that has not yet been integrated on all devices. We expect that the DIB7700 will enable this to become a reality, Levy added.
