Transceiver suits ISM band apps

Atmel Corp. unveiled a new single-chip RF transceiver that provides high-level performance for ISM band applications with notably lowered current consumption and a 30 percent cut in the BoM.

According to the press release, the new ATA542x device family represents a major step in the integration of RF transceivers. The Image Rejection Mixer allows elimination of a SAW filter, the Low-IF architecture does not require external IF filter, and the low loss integrated RX/TX switch eliminates need for an external switch.

Atmel added that specific attention has been paid to maintaining low current consumption resulting in a 20 percent power reduction versus competing multi-channel transceivers. This makes the ATA542x devices suitable for long battery life applications such as automatic meter reading, alarm and security systems, home automation systems, and other wireless remote controllers and telemetry systems where low-power consumption and very long range are required.

"Our attention to low current consumption RF designs makes the ATA542x family a major step in license-free RF designs, with 10mA in Rx and 15mA to 20mA in Tx," said Eric Mercier, Atmel's RF marketing and application leader for ISM RF products. "The fully green QFN package and its high integration allow easy and dense implementation. As with our other SmartRF tranceivers, the output power, 10dBm, and the sensitivity, typical -107dBm/FSK and -114dBm/ASK, allow long-range communications.

Additional features include an SPI port and easy programming, a data rate up to 40Kbps, a bit-check in receive mode, a 16-byte data buffer in both Rx and Tx mode, an RSSI, and a 4MHz clock output to feed the companion microcontroller.

The ATA542x is already available, with pricing starting at $1.8 in large quantities.
