Microsemi PAs support Realtek WLAN chipsets

Microsemi Corp. announced that its high-performance 802.11a/b/g power amplifiers (PA) are in reference designs supporting the latest series of dual-band WLAN chipsets from Taiwan-based Realtek Semiconductor Corp.

The IC from Microsemi supporting Realtek chipsets include PAs designed for IEEE802.11a/b/g WLAN applications and a fixed/adjustable voltage linear regulator that combines low dropout, high accuracy, ultra low ground current and fast response. Microsemi claims its WLAN PAs-- designed for an advanced InGaP/GaAs HBT manufacturing process--feature active bias, power detection, on-chip input/interstage matching plus the low current consumption required in portable applications.

The Realtek advanced chipsets, which provide dual 2.4GHz and 5GHz performance, were designed to take advantage of economical 0.18?m CMOS production. "Our goal is to provide customers with more economic and competitive solutions for their WLAN applications,'' said Thomas Chou, product planning and marketing manager for Realtek.

Realtek's latest chipsets provide dual band (11a/b/g) functionality at a price point that so far has only been seen on single band (11b/g) implementations, thus enabling the SOHO/home market to take advantage of a far greater number of available channels that come in the 5GHz band. Significantly, it also avoids interference from competing applications such as Bluetooth, cordless phones and microwave ovens, which co-exist in the same 2.4GHz band.
