Resistor operates in harsh environmentsFor applications that require high-surge capability and must operate in harsh environments, TT Electronics IRC Wirewound and Film Technologies Division offer a series of power wirewound resistors with lead-free vitreous enamel coating, which allows the resistors to withstand the harsh environments and high temperatures found in industrial applications.

Designated as the W20 Series, these resistors are rated for 3-, 5-, 7-, 10- and 14W with limiting element voltages between 100V and 750V. Resistance values range from 0.1? to 100 k? with standard tolerances down to 1 percent. Typical coefficient of resistance (TCR) ratings are between 75ppm/C and 200ppm/C. The operating temperature range is -55C to 200C. Custom specifications are also available.

According to Keith Chipman, product manager for IRC's Wirewound and Film Technologies Division, the robust construction of the resistors enhances its stability and reliable performance under extreme conditions.

"The W20 series resistors' vitreous enameled coating essentially seals the wirewound resistor element in a glasslike material that makes the device impervious to even the harshest environments," Chipman said, in a statement. "The protective coating and markings are resistant to all normal industrial cleaning solvents used for printed circuits."

These W20 resistors may be used in current inrush and surge protection circuits for power supplies, motor controllers and circuit protectors, particularly in applications subject to harsh environments such as chemical processing machinery, welding equipment, industrial motor controls, and power generation systems. Pricing for the W20 series resistor begins at 29 cents each in quantities of 1,000. Delivery is 10 to 12 weeks.
