Image processing semiconductor maker Genesis Microchip Inc. has announced it would develop display controller solutions utilizing the new DisplayPort digital display interface specification.

In May 2005, the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) announced its plan to develop this new open standard that would unify internal and external interfaces for all display applications. By consolidating both the external (box-to-box) and internal (LCD panel) display connections, VESA hopes to reduce the overall cost of producing digital displays, including LCD, plasma, CRT and projection displays, as well as PCs and other sources of image content.

Genesis Microchip's new DisplayPort-based products are intended to coexist with the HDMI interface standard. Genesis has recently signed the HDMI Adopter's agreement with HDMI Licensing LLC and expects to introduce products supporting HDMI later in the year.
