Motorola Inc. has received orders in the second quarter for its cdma2000 1X SoftSwitch from KDDI, a provider of 3G cellular phone services. The SoftSwitch provided by Motorola will be used as the core switch in KDDI's cdma2000 1X network.

More compact than conventional circuit switches, the Motorola SoftSwitch (MSS) minimizes the space and power required by telecom carriers. With this, significant reductions in capital investments and operating expenses are realized, leading to an increased competitive advantage for carriers in an increasingly competitive global market.

In April 2002, KDDI began its nationwide deployment of cdma2000 1X, a 3G cellular service, on Motorola's cdmaOne network. Since then, Motorola has played a vital role in building KDDI's wireless mobile network as the sole vendor of cdma2000 1X RAN systems.

The MSS platform has been deployed as a full-featured serving MSC in greenfield, expansion and legacy switch replacement environments. The ability to provide telecom carriers a smooth migration without negatively affecting existing systems is a key driver behind its continuing success. Today, MSS is already looking to the needs of 9 telecom carriers with contracted capacity to serve over 18 million subscribers from over 8 countries and territories worldwide.
