Semtech Corp.'s SC900, a power management IC with five ultra-low dropout regulators (ULDOs), includes an I?C interface to facilitate precise control of each regulator's output voltage, power-good monitor setpoint, reset logic and active/nonactive shutdown mode. The chip is suited to cellular phones, PDAs and similar portable equipment applications where it's essential to maintain performance as the battery voltage slowly declines.

"The SC900's I2C interface allows for last minute adjustments to the five key power parameters to optimize system performance," said C.S. Mitter, director of power management for Handheld Products. "Hardware designers can also focus on cost reduction via integration rather than individual device selection and qualification."

Working from a 2.7V to 5.5V input, the chip can set each ULDO's output in 50mV increments from 1.45V to 3V with an accuracy of 3 percent. Output voltage accuracy for each of the five regulators is within 3.5 percent over the full input voltage range and across the full ambient temperature range of -40C to 85C. Each ULDO, which has a typical dropout voltage of 50mV at 50mA (maximum output is 150mA for each of four ULDOs, 200mA for the remaining ULDO), can be independently enabled/disabled. Output noise is 45?V RMS. The power supply rejection ratio is 60dB at 50mA, and the chip draws approximately 215?A (total for all five ULDOs) in sleep mode.

The SC900 includes under-voltage lockout, over-temperature, and short-circuit protection to prevent the device from operating in an unspecified state.

The SC900, in a 4-by-4 mm, Pb-free and RoHS compliant 20-lead MLPQ package, is priced at $1.05 each in 1,000 pieces. An evaluation kit containing a graphical user interface (GUI) program, USB cable and evaluation board is also available (SC900EVB).
