NI's two new PXI controllers increase data-streaming throughput

National Instruments (NI) announced that engineers can now use its two new RT PXI embedded controllers to increase their real-time control rates and data-streaming throughput. According to the company, the PXI-8196 RT controller is the highest-performance real-time controller available. With a 2GHz Pentium M 760 processor, it delivers an average performance improvement of 18 percent compared to the previous highest-performance real-time controller. Meanwhile, the PXI-8195 RT controller features a 1.5GHz Celeron M 370 processor.

The new controllers offer reliable, deterministic operation on a rugged platform and are an execution target for programs written in NI's LabVIEW Real-Time. Engineers can use the controllers for a wide range of applications that require real-time performance, including machine control, reliable test and HIL simulation in industries such as industrial control, industrial test, ATE and military/aerospace.

Both new controllers offer Gigabit Ethernet for high-speed networking of distributed systems. Supporting a maximum of 2GB of dual-channel DDR2 memory, these new products offer double the memory capacity and performance of previous-generation real-time PXI controllers. The controllers also feature an optional solid-state hard drive for applications that require extreme ruggedness.

The PXI-8196 RT and PXI-8195 RT controllers incorporate an extensive set of peripherals such as a hard drive, GPIB, serial and Ethernet into a single module to ease system integration. These embedded controllers operate with a wide range of PXI and CompactPCI devices from both NI and third-party vendors, and are shipped with preinstalled NI LabVIEW Real-Time embedded software.

PCI eXtensions for Instrumentation (PXI) is an open specification governed by the PXI Systems Alliance that defines a rugged, CompactPCI-based platform for measurement and automation. PXI offers additional features, such as environmental specifications, standardized software and built-in timing and triggering.
