90nm device targets WLAN designs

Marvell announced the Marvell 88W8686, which the company reports is the world's first ultra-low-power 90nm Wireless LAN (WLAN) single chip device. Drawing less than 400mw, the system features a total footprint of less than 50mm?.

The Marvell 88W8686 integrates an ARM compliant CPU, high speed serial host interfaces including SDIO and SPI to ensure interoperability with a variety of host systems, and an 802.11 a/b/g RF transceiver with full cellular coexistence.

Targeted at a wide variety of consumer devices, including 3G+ and broadband handsets, the device has full compliance for advanced communications standards including complete support for L3, TCP/IP, UMA and IMS. It is fully backwards compatible with Marvell's WLAN software suite for Linux, Symbian, Windows CE and other proprietary operating systems.

The Marvell 88W8686 is currently being sampled to OEM partners. Development kits are available with hardware reference designs, development boards and a complete suite of software.
