Taiwan Semiconductor Mfg Co. will give up its membership in International Sematech later this month, and is "considering" joining the Interuniversity Microelectronics Center (IMEC, Leuven, Belgium), a TSMC spokesman said.

"Our R&D people believe that IMEC is more focused on the exploratory type of R&D that will be more beneficial to TSMC," the TSMC spokesman said, in response to an inquiry from EE Times. A Sematech spokesman declined to comment.

TSMC will leave Sematech on Aug. 22, two years after delivering an "intent to withdraw" letter to the Austin-based consortium. At the beginning of 2004, both STMicroelectronics and Hynix Semiconductor left Sematech.

TSMC's departure would reduce Sematech's core membership to eight companies, including AMD, Freescale Semiconductor, Hewlett-Packard, IBM, Infineon Technologies, Intel, Philips, and Texas Instruments.

Several other companies, including Panasonic, Samsung, and Spansion, have joined a Sematech affiliate, called the International Semiconductor Manufacturing Initiative, which has lower annual dues than regular Sematech membership and which does not include participation in Sematech programs in front-end processing, interconnects and lithography.
