Shanghai's Opulan Technologies Corp. has licensed the low-power MIPS32 4KEc core for use in a system-on-chip platform aimed at China's fast-growing market for xDSL access equipment.

The license is the latest in a handful of wins for MIPS Technologies Inc. in the China market since it opened offices and a research center there in March.

Other recent licensees include Actions Semiconductor Co. Ltd, which will use the 4KEc Pro and M4K Pro cores for SoCs in portable digital multimedia applications such as MP3 players, as well as Magima Corp. and Huaya Microelectronics, which are using the 4Kc to develop SoCs for set-top-box (STB) and digital television (DTV) projects. MIPS has also licensed the 4Kc to Shanghai Jiao Tong University for DTV chips.

Recent statistics indicate that broadband growth is slowing in some developed markets, such as the U.S. and Japan while it maintains robust growth in markets such as China, which is closing in on the U.S. for the title of largest number of broadband subscribers - 34 million versus 39 million at the end of 2004. According to Infonetics Research, worldwide DSL subscribers grew 70 percent to 98.6 million between 2003 and 2004, and are projected to reach over 195 million in 2008. The report also stated that 29 percent of 2004 total DSL revenue was from the Asia Pacific region - driven by China.

MIPS said the 4KE core family delivers 1.5 dhrystone MIPS per megahertz in an area as small as 1.0 square millimeter in a 0.13-micron manufacturing process from the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd foundry. MIPS also offers the 4Kc as a hard core on Shanghai Manufacturing International Corp's 0.18-micron manufacturing process.
