IMEC project seeks to develop nanoscale oscillator for wireless devices

Global nanotechnology research center IMEC is seeking to demonstrate the concept of spin torque in a nanoscale microwave integrated oscillator for wireless integrated devices.

IMEC is coordinating the project, called Tunamos for tunable nanomagnetic oscillators for integrated transceiver applications, as part of the FP6 program of the European Union. Other program partners include STMicroelectronics, UPS Universite Paris Sud and UFSD University of Sheffield.

Scientist believe the recent discovery of the spin torque oscillator, a nano-patterned ferromagnetic device in which high-quality tunable microwave oscillations can be generated by a small DC current, could have significant ramifications for microwave technology. Existing RF oscillators lack the combination of high-quality resonance with a high integration level, needed for low-power and low-cost applications, and wideband tunability.

The Tunamos project aims to study the oscillating modes in the range of 5GHz to 10GHz as well as the influence of parameters on the microwave frequency, signal power and phase noise.

The scientists believe monolithic integration with a high-gain RF CMOS amplifier circuit will boost the power to levels suitable for wireless applications, potentially leading to integrating flexible and agile low-cost radio capability into a wider range of silicon products.
