The new MAX5481-MAX5484 devices from Maxim Integrated Products are touted to be the industry's first pin-selectable up/down or SPI-compatible, 1024-tap nonvolatile digital potentiometers packaged in a 3-by-3mm, 16-pin TQFN.

The integrated EEPROM simulates mechanical potentiometers by storing the wiper position prior to power down. According to Maxim, this capability significantly reduces size compared to mechanical pots. The MAX548x family also offers ratiometric and end-to-end temperature coefficients as low as 5ppm/C and 35ppm/C, respectively.

The MAX548x devices save power by requiring less than 1?A in standby and operating from a 2.7V to 5.25V single supply or 2.5V dual supply. End-to-end resistances of 10 kiloohm and 50 kiloohm are available. The MAX548x come in two wiper configurationsvoltage divider or variable resistor. Industry standard up/down or SPI-compatible 3-wire serial interfaces on one chip make these new digital pots simple to operate.

Prices start at $1.95 (1,000-up, FOB USA) for the new MAX5481-MAX5484 devices.
