DIMM improves thermal performance

FB-DIMMs deliver up to 32GB of memoryDesigned for server applications, Elpida Memory Inc.'s 4GB fully buffered dual in-line memory modules (FB-DIMMs), part numbers EBE41FE4AAHA-5C-E and EBE41FE4AAHA-6E-E, can deliver up to 32GB of memory in an eight-slot server platform.

The FB-DIMMs consist of 36 pieces of 1Gb DDR2 SDRAM devices, which are incorporated into its stacked FBGA (sFBGA) packages to achieve thin modules that measure 6.7mm compared with the JEDEC specification of 9.8mm. The module thinness helps increase air flow between DIMMs and improves thermal performance in server and blade systems.

The EBE41FE4AAHA-5C-E and EBE41FE4AAHA-6E-E are organized as 256M words x 72-bits x 2 Ranks.

The modules are available in two performance modesPC2-4200F or PC2-5300F. PC2-4200F mode uses DDR2-533 devices with a CAS Latency (CL) of 4-4-4, and the PC2-5300F mode uses DDR2-667 devices with a CL=5-5-5.

The FB-DIMMs can achieve a module data transfer rate of 5.3GB per channel and system data transfer rate of 21.2GBps in a 4-channel configuration.

The FB-DIMM is designed to improve memory controller timing and increase bus speed to support next-generation high performance server processors.

"The new FB-DIMM standard represents a major technology breakthrough for server platforms," said Jun Kitano, director of Technical Marketing for Elpida Memory (USA). "Elpida's FB-DIMMs leverage our existing strengths in device manufacturing and packaging technology, as well as our expertise in supporting the leading-edge of the server market."

The FB-DIMM calls for all DRAM signals, including clock, address, command and data, to be buffered at the high-speed Advanced Memory Buffer (AMB) chip located on the DIMM. This helps to secure the DRAM timing margins during high-speed operation with a much shorter signal path between the DRAM and AMB.

The FB-DIMM also adopts a Point-to-Point connection on the bus between the memory controller and the DIMM, as well as between the DIMMs themselves. This allows increased bus speed with a shorter connection path. It also improves the maximum number of DIMMs that can be loaded on the busup to eight 2-rank DIMMs per channelwith less concern about signal degradation.

Elpida shipped the first FB-DIMM test samples in December 2004. The new 4GB modules are available now for all customers in sample quantities, and volume production is scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2005. Lower density 2GB, 1GB and 512MB FB-DIMM samples are also available.

The EBE41FE4AAHA-5C-E, PC2-4200F based on 1Gb DDR2 device operating at 533Mbps costs $3,000. The EBE41FE4AAHA-6E-E, PC2-5300F based on 1Gb DDR2 devices operating at 667Mbps is priced at $3,500.
