Annual shipments of 1-inch diameter hard disk drives will nearly triple from 8.7 million units in 2004 to 23.2 million in 2005 and move on to 140.0 million units in 2009, according to The Information Network, a market research company.

This represents a compound annual growth rate of the total period of about 75 percent.

The reason for the growth is the increasing number of mobile applications such as MP3 players, PDAs, digital still cameras, and digital video cameras, that use miniature disk based storage, The Information Network said, although the sector will also come under pressure from solid-state non-volatile memory.

Shipments of 1.8-inch HDDs will increase from 8.8 million in 2004 to 13.5 million in 2005. In contrast, shipments of 3.5-inch HDDs for desktop applications will increase from 209.3 million in 2004 to 240.5 million in 2005, the market research company said.

The HDD market, including substrates and recording heads, are set to represent a large growth area for semiconductor processing equipment and materials, such as lithography, deposition, metrology, and CMP, according to the analyst.
