Nano-imprint lithograhy company Obducat AB has entered into an agreement with Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd on the production of stamping machines for DVD optical discs and said it would drop other projects to pursue its opportunities with Samsung.

The company is also emphasizing storage and biosensors, as well as semiconductor manufacture, as application areas for its nano-imprint lithography machines.

The stampers referenced in the Samsung agreement are for the development of next generation Blu-ray format DVDs, which are set to store 100GB per layer, in comparison with 25GB in current DVDs.

Samsung has the intention to invest early 2006 in an electron beam recorder (EBR) lithography system for use on rotating substrates for production of stamps, Obducat (Malmo, Sweden) said.

To allow the successful execution of these joint development activities with Samsung, Obducat said it would necessary to re-allocate resources towards advanced optical disks. As a result Obducat said it would likely terminate its long-standing EBR activities with TDK regarding patterned media for hard drives.

Obducat said the move was regrettable because TDK uses its nano-imprint lithography equipment.

Obducat said it has recently produced test patterns for patterned media hard disk drives representing a storage capacity of some 400Gb per square inch, representing a storage capacity four times higher than current media and that it would work with other companies in the hard disk drive industry. "With these results at hand, it was a logical as well as a necessary decision to discontinue activities with TDK in favor of other on-going activities with other hard drive industry players," said Patrik Lundstrom, chief executive officer of Obducat, in a statement.

"At the same time, the agreement with Samsung will simplify our internal prioritization, since we are now in position to co-operate with one of the definite leaders also within the optical storage media industry," he also said.
