MediaTek is negotiating for orders of handset-use chips from Taiwan-based handset vendor BenQ Corp., according to market sources. The two companies reportedly have yet to sign a contract pending price negotiations.

MediaTek is said to be reluctant to comply with BenQ's demand for lower quotes, as MediaTek's prices has claimed that its prices are already 10 to 20 percent lower than quotes from international suppliers.

MediaTek will likely ship over 25 million handset-use chips in 2005, up from the 20 million units the company projected early this year, if the orders are secured. BenQ is expected to ship 50 million handsets a year once it integrates its handset business with Siemens' mobile business.
