Agilent Technologies Inc. has launched a new family of high-brightness, white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) in PLCC-2 (plastic leaded chip carrier) and Power PLCC-4 surface-mount packages. These white LEDs are drop-in replacements for the Osram TopLED and Power TopLED products in automotive interior lighting applications.

Complementing Agilent's existing AlInGaP and InGaN color PLCC-2 and PLCC-4 LEDs, the new InGaN white LEDs provide customers with a complete LED offering in PLCC packaging. In the PLCC-2 package, the new HSMW-A101-R50J1 provides 100mcd minimum luminous intensity (Iv) and the HSMW-A100-T50J1 provides 250mcd minimum Iv. The Iv specifications are based on both products operating at 20mA forward current. In the Power PLCC-4 package, the new HSMW-A400-U00M2 provides 400mcd minimum Iv when operating at 30mA forward current.

The new HSMW-A10xx and HSMW-A40xx series white surface mount LEDs feature a super-wide 120 viewing angle, making them suitable for panel, pushbutton, or general backlighting in automotive interiors. They operate over a temperature range of -40C to 100C to ensure reliability in harsh automotive environments.

In addition, their flat top-emitting surface makes it easy to mate with light pipes. With a built-in reflector increasing the intensity of the light output, these LEDs are also well suited for automotive ambient lighting such as vanity mirror lights, cabin lights/dome lights, and car-door puddle lights. Other applications include panel, pushbutton, or general backlighting in office and industrial equipment and home appliances, variable message signs, and indoor/outdoor ambient lighting for businesses and residences.

To facilitate pick-and-place assembly, the LEDs are packed in EIA-compliant tape and reel, and every reel is shipped with devices selected for uniformity of brightness and color, according to the company. These LEDs are compatible with infrared solder reflow and through-the-wave soldering processes.

Pricing for the PLCC syrface mount white LEDs range from 23 cents to 34 cents each in high-volume quantities. Delivery is four weeks for samples and production quantities.
