Micron Technology Inc. announced that it is the first supplier to provide PC2-5300 and PC2-6400 double data rate 2 (DDR2) very low profile (VLP) registered and unbuffered mini dual-inline memory modules (MiniDIMMs) for the networking and communications equipment markets.

Available in densities of 256MB, 512MB and 1GB, the reduced height form factor (18.29mm) of the VLP MiniDIMMs enables designers to integrate more modules in the same or less board space, thereby improving performance in networking servers, routers, switches, gateways, hubs and bridges, said the press release.

The low profile of the VLP DDR2 MiniDIMMs enables vertical socketing on the board, in contrast to traditional angled memory sockets, and reduces the total memory space footprint. This form factor can improve air flow, which decreases device operating temperatures, improving system reliability. The VLP MiniDIMMs are backward compatible with existing MiniDIMM sockets, enabling engineers to receive immediate benefits without any product redesign, added Micron.

"The strong customer interest in our VLP MiniDIMMs validates Micron's strategic direction of providing innovative, forward-thinking products to the enterprise networking market," commented Terry Lee, executive director of Advanced Technology and Strategic Marketing for Micron's Systems Memory Group. "Micron is currently the only company with immediate availability of VLP MiniDIMMs, and we are demonstrating once again Micron's leading design and technical expertise, and our keen focus on delivering high-quality, reliable solutions to our customers."

Production samples of the PC2-5300 and PC2-6400 DDR2 VLP registered and unbuffered MiniDIMM are already available, and volume production is expected in the fourth quarter of 2005.
