Taiwan Semiconductor Mfg Co. (TSMC) has refuted rumors that it will set up a 300mm wafer fab plant in mainland China. The company also denied reports that it will be involved in a mainland China-based IC design joint venture.

The company stated that it has no reason to build a facility in the mainland as it has already laid out plans to set up a third fab in Taiwan, in addition to expanding its existing 300mm fabs in the Hsinchu and Tainan Science Parks.

TSMC also refuted reports that it will be involved in an IC design house to be set up by a consortium of companies led by home appliance maker TCL Corp. and to be headed by former TSMC vice president Glenda Hu. TSMC has stated that it no longer has business ties with Hu.

Further, TSMC stated that its venture capital holdings, the Emerging Alliance Fund and the VTAF II Fund, have made no investments in any mainland China-based company.
