Protection devices stop surges in HDMI applications

Protect data interfaces operating at 2GHz

Semtech Corp. has expanded its RailClamp protection family with two new ultra-low capacitance devices designed to protect data interfaces operating at speeds higher than 2GHz. The new RClamp 0502B and RClamp 0514M protect 2 lines and 4 lines, respectively, with a typical line-to-line capacitance of 0.7pF, which make them suitable for HDMI applications such as plasma displays, HDTVs and set-top boxes.

The HDMI Compliance Test Specification (CTS) requires sink (receiver) ports maintain a differential impedance of 100 ohms 15 percent. Too much added capacitance will cause the impedance of the differential pair to drop, said the company. By offering low capacitance, the RClamp0502B and RClamp0514M meet this stringent specification, while providing a high level of protection against electrostatic discharge (ESD) and cable discharge events (CDE). In addition, neither device is said to require impedance compensation, such as common mode chokes, to meet the HDMI CTS requirements.

Both the RClamp0502B and RClamp0514M devices feature extremely low clamping voltage for superior protection of sensitive ICs in high ESD threat environments, and the solid-state design ensures protection against repeated strikes without degradation or damage. They meet IEC 61000-4-2 specification (15kV air and 8kV contact) for protection against ESD, and exhibit no insertion loss to 3GHz (line-to-line).

These devices also feature a flow through design for ease of layout. The pins of the RClamp0514M are spaced at a 0.5mm pitch for reducing discontinuities on high-speed lines. The RClamp0502B also has a flow through design and protects one differential pair with the capability to separate clock and data pins.

The RClamp0514M device is offered in a 5-by-3.1-by-1.1mm MSOP-10 package, while the RClamp0502B device comes housed in a 1.7-by-1.75-by-0.9mm SC-75 package. Both devices are lead-free and meet the European Union's RoHS directive.

The RClamp0502B, ordering code RClamp0502B.TCT, is priced at 28 cents each, while the RClamp0514M, with the ordering code RClamp0514M.TBT, is priced at 52 cents each, both in quantities o f 1,000. Both devices are available in production quantities.
