Thermal printheads for high-speed printing appsRohm Electronics has introduced its new NE3002-WA30A (2-inch model) and NE3004-WA30A (4-inch model) thin-film thermal printheads for high-speed printing applications. The new thermal printheads feature an ultra-hard protection film and a proprietary step-free design (no step between the heat element and electrode) that deliver lower power consumption, improvements in anti-corrosion capabilities of the electrode, and reduced scratching.

In addition, these features enable clearer image quality and higher reliability even during continuous printing at high speeds (300mm/s at 300dpi), according to the company. If used with heat history control, 500mm/s at 300dpi is possible. The new printheads also offer an increased operating life of 150km or 1 1/2 times that of conventional products even at high-speed printing.

The new NE3002-WA30A and NE3004-WA30A printheads also incorporate a unique near-edge structure that is said to allow for uniform, accurate printing even on thick media. Resin-type ribbons can be used with the printheads. Applications include barcode printers, label printers, packaging printers, ATMs, ticket printers, scale printers and point of sale applications.

Samples are already available. Sample price for the NE3002-WA30A printhead is $200 each and $300 for the NE3004-WA30A. Mass production begins October 2005 with a minimum purchase quantity of 100 pieces.
