Allegro MicroSystems' A8483 is a 1.2MHz step-up regulator chip suited for general purpose battery-powered work as well as bias/backlighting supplies for plasma and liquid-crystal displays. Other applications include cellular phones, PDAs, camcorders, personal stereos, MP3 players, cameras and mobile GPS systems.

Typically, the 5-pin chip is called on to deliver 15mA or so at 15V from a 2.5V to 10V input for small LCDs (40mA to 80mA at 25V to 32V for plasma displays, LCD TVs and other similar applications). Maximum output voltage can be set to 35V. The device's switch current limit is 350mA.

The A8483, in a five-pin 3-by-3mm MLP/TDFN package, is priced at 47 cents each in 10,000-unit quantities. Lead time is eight to 12 weeks.
