Rising demand from the liquid crystal display TV, desktop PC monitor and mobile computer businesses will in turn double the sales of driver integrated circuits for large-size LCD panels through 2009, predicts iSuppli Corp.

According to the El Segundo, Calif. market research firm, revenue from worldwide shipments of driver ICs for large-size LCDs will expand to $4.2 billion in 2009, rising at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 12.6 percent from $2.3 billion in 2004. Unit shipments of LCD drivers will reach 4.2 billion units in 2009, expanding at a CAGR of 19.8 percent from 1.7 billion last year.

For 2005, iSuppli projects driver sales of $3.0 billion on 2.3 billion units.

Large-size LCD panels make extensive use of driver ICs, said iSuppli. For example, an LCD TV panel with full high-definition resolution of 1,920 by 1,080 pixels and progressive scanning can use up to 15 column driver ICs and five row driver chips.

The combination of rising flat-panel TV sales and the extensive use of row and column drivers in LCD TVs will cause shipments of driver ICs for LCD TVs to rise to 57.9 million units in 2009, a CAGR of 42.6 percent, iSuppli predicts. Shipments of LCD driver ICs for mobile PCs and notebook computers also are slated to increase, albeit at a somewhat slower pace than those for LCD TVs.
