Claiming an industry first, programmable logic supplier Xilinx Inc. and intellectual property (IP) core supplier 4i2i Communications Wednesday (Sept. 7) launched a high-definition H.264 video encoder in a single field-programmable gate array (FPGA).

Using Xilinx programmable logic devices, 4i2i (Weybridge, England) has developed a licensable IP solution that provides a high-definition H.264 encoder available in VHDL, Verilog or netlist formats, according to the companies. This encoder can be implemented in either the Virtex or Spartan FPGA families from Xilinx (San Jose, Calif.), the companies said. H.264 is a high-compression digital video codec standard.

According to the companies, the encoder provides an integrated, cost-effective solution that designers can use in a wide variety of video-based applications such as broadcast, video conferencing, video surveillance, and aerospace and defense applications. Xilinx said it would demonstrate the solution, beginning tomorrow, at the International Broadcaster Conference in Amsterdam.

"The flexibility of Xilinx FPGAs allowed 4i2i to develop fully productized intellectual property which fits in a single cost-effective FPGA device and includes an H.264 HD encoder, video scaler, noise reducer, camera and host interface," said Martyn Riley, managing director and CEO of 4i2i, in a statement.
