ODMs could gain access to Intel's WiMAX chips as the microchip giant is set to lower restrictions on its supply policy to manufacturers, sources have said. Intel's WiMax technology is a single-chip solution (PRO/Wireless 5116) suitable for 802.16-2004-enabled CPE (customer premise equipment) devices.
Wireless product developer GemTek Technology has exclusive access to WiMAX chips in Taiwan under Intel's current policy. The setup has prompted other Taiwan-based makers of networking devices to source WiMAX-enabled chips from Wavesat, a company based in Canada.
According to sources, Intel is expected to revise its access policy by the end of this quarter. Several Taiwan-based manufacturers may be added to Intel's ODM partnership list, including Foxconn Electronics (registered as Hon Hai Precision Industry), Asustek Computer, CyberTAN Technology, Accton Technology and Alpha Networks.
