RF interconnect offers space, cost savings

Tyco Electronics has unveiled a new low profile, microminiature RF interconnect that delivers both a space and cost savings in direct board-to-board connections.

Traditionally, board-to-board RF connections have been achieved by using either two cable connectors or two board connectors with a third, spacer or bullet, between them. Both of these options can add significant cost and assembly time, said the company.

Tyco's solution is its new compression coax board-to-board blindmate connector that eliminates the need for these multiple connectors by offering a single connector assembly with a spring-loaded contact. One side of the connector is soldered on the base circuit board surface and the other side mates directly on the opposite target board using applied spring pressure. This one-piece design offers an easy connection with large radial and axial misalignment, and eliminates the risk of breaking soldered connections when mating or un-mating.

This new compression coax board-to-board blindmate connector is initially available in three different lengths for board spacing of 6.65-, 10- and 14mm. Tolerance against axial misalignments from the nominal board stacking height is specified as 1mm for the 10mm and 14mm versions, and 0.3mm for the 6.65mm version. Tolerance against radial misalignment is specified as 0.8mm from centerline, in any direction, for all three versions. Additional sizes can be developed by customer request.

Key electrical characteristics include an impedance of 50?, and return loss of -20dB minimum at frequencies up to 2.1GHz. The new device can operate effectively at frequencies up to 6GHz. The operating temperature range is -40C to 125C.

Supplied in trays for pick and place compatibility, the new RF connectors are priced at approximately $5.80 in quantities of 10,000. Delivery is 12 weeks.
