Sharp Corp. disclosed that they have developed two new 3-megapixel CCD camera modules designed for camera-equipped mobile phones. The LZ0P3751 camera module features an internal autofocus, while the LZ0P3758 includes both autofocus and an all-internal optical zoom lens that is switchable between normal and 2X zoom, which is touted to be an industry first.

According to Sharp, its proprietary high-density surface mount technology enabled it to develop a compact module form factor, with a volume of 4.7cc. The modules also feature a FIT CCD image sensor and high-performance lens, providing high resolution and high image quality with minimal distortion.

According to InfoTrends Research Group, camera phone sales are expected to experience a CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 55 percent through 2008 to 656 million units. Meanwhile, market research firm ABI Research predicts that within the next two years, low-end camera phones will take much of the market share now held by low-end standalone digital cameras.
