New package delivers 68% footprint reduction

Fairchild Semiconductor introduced what it touts as the smallest single-port USB 2.0 "Hi-Speed" (480Mbps) analog switch in a MicroPak chip scale package (CSP).

According to the press release, the 1.6-by-2.1mm MicroPak 10-terminal CSP delivers a 68 percent footprint reduction compared to typical competitive switches (3.36mm? vs. 10.5mm?). The FSUSB23 switch's compact packaging, combined with very low power consumption (720MHz) operation, make it a suitable high-performance, space-saving USB 2.0 switch for today's multi-functional cellphones. Additional applications for the FSUSB23 include PDAs, MP3 players, digital cameras and laptops.

The FSUSB23's ability to switch Hi-Speed USB signals allows it to comfortably pass the eye diagram compliance for AC and DC performance to meet the USB 2.0 high-speed standard. Additionally, this product retains complete USB 1.1 full-speed (12Mbps) reverse compatibility for use in a range of applications.

"Signal integrity and low power consumption are especially critical considerations in cellphone applications," said Jerry Johnston, product manager for analog switches. "The FSUSB23's wide bandwidth meets these concerns by easily passing 3rd order harmonic frequencies with virtually undetectable levels of distortion and jitter."

"In addition, the convergence of more features and connectivity into increasingly smaller ultra-portables is driving the demand for Hi-Speed USB switches in the smallest available packages. The combined performance attributes and ultra-compact packaging of the FSUSB23 offer designers the flexibility they need to solve their design challenges."

Other key features of the FSUSB23 include a 7kV Electrostatic Discharge (ESD), 6? typical On Resistance (RON) and non-adjacent channel crosstalk (-43dB at 250MHz).

Compliant with EU requirements, the Pb-free FSUSB23 also exceeds the requirements of the joint IPC/JEDEC standard J-STD-020B. The FSUSB23L10X (MicroPak) and FSUSB23BQX (DQFN) are priced at 97 cents each (1,000 pcs).
