Photocouplers save board space

Sharp Microelectronics of the Americas has added a new family of high-speed photocouplers in SO8 packages. Saving board space and reducing component count, the new SO8 product line includes 1-, 15- and 25Mbps devices in single-channel models, and 10Mbps devices in both single- and dual-channel versions. These devices also incorporate optimal noise immunity, higher heat resistance, and improved isolation characteristics, said the company.

In addition to providing a smaller, thinner package, the new SO8 photocouplers, in the dual-channel version, also help save board space as well as reduce component count and the number of placements required. These are particularly well-suited for North American applications such as plasma display panels, digital audio amplifiers, power supplies, digital field bus and ground isolation in high-speed logic where the surface-mount 8-pin package has become an industry standard.

Key features of the Pb-free, RoHS-compliant product line include high common mode rejection (CMR) thanks to an OPIC detector design, excellent isolation voltage and higher heat resistance, which is particularly important for lead-free soldering, as well as low input current for a power savings, high efficiency and high noise immunity. Safety standard approvals are available on request.

In addition to these S08 devices, Sharp has also developed a new multifunction photocoupler (part number PC925L0NSZ0F) for inverter high-speed MOS-FET/IGBT drives. With a 2.5A output, this device can be designed into motor control products. Samples are available now. Samples of the new SO8 product line are available now, with production quantities available beginning in Q4 2005. The photocoupler is priced at 90 cents in quantities of 1,000.
