Programmable logic provider Xilinx Inc. introduced early this week what it said was the first FPGA intellectual property (IP) core for implementing controller area networks in automotive designs.

The CAN LogiCORE, developed by the Xilinx Hyderabad team, complements the expansion of the company's Xilinx Automotive (XA) family of PLDs. The CAN LogiCORE solution provides a full set of features and capabilities to quickly implement the increasingly popular CAN protocol with the Xilinx Spartan and Virtex platform FPGAs, the company said.

"Flexibility is essential to the automotive market," said Kevin Tanaka, automotive marketing and product planning manager at Xilinx, in a statement "The combination of our XA silicon solutions with this critical piece of functionality provides a natural fit for developing next-generation automotive applications."

Xilinx said the CAN LogiCORE IP is immediately available, with a one-time site license charge of $18,000.
