Provides about a 50% space savings

Touted as one of the most compact solutions for devices such as digital cameras, audio players, and mobile phones that use a cradle docking function, the new dual-row 0.50mm pitch CradleCon connector system from Molex Inc. provides about a 50 percent space savings compared to single-row docking solutions, while offering a smaller form factor than most competitive dual-row systems, said the company.

Available in a variety of SMT board-to-board options and custom cable versions, the CradleCon board-to-board types feature right-angle PC-board plugs typically used on the equipment side, and straight and right-angle PC-board receptacles used on the docking units. The PC-board plugs feature SMT and through-hole solder tabs that provide grounding support, secure board retention and strain relief for SMT tails.

The custom cable versions are offered in both straight- and right-angle versions, which can be used for such functions as USB, AV Jack and power charge. Available in 14 to 36 circuits, the CradleCon system is said to provide the largest circuit size range on the market for a miniature docking system to enable signal and power options.

Molex said the PC-board pattern layout of the CradleCon system is the key to its space savings. The new system includes a dual-row staggered SMT pattern, which is easier to solder and does not increase in size incrementally as quickly as in-line solder patterns.

Other features include chamfered lead-ins to facilitate blind mating, friction mating locks and polarizing keys. Side grounding fingers provide additional shell grounding and electrostatic discharge/electromagnetic interference (ESD/EMI) protection, and a long contact wipe length and gold plating for durability and a more secure electrical contact.

The CradleCon system includes a metal shutter version that helps to protect against both dust/debris and ESD/EMI. Other system features include embossed tape packaging and pick-and-place tape for robotic insertion.

A 14-circuit PC-board plug is priced at 78 cents in quantities of 50,000. Delivery is from stock to six weeks.
