Ferrite bead chip inductors tackle high-current, high-speed signals

Stackpole Electronics Inc. has introduced a broad line of multi-layer ferrite bead chip inductors for high-current and high-speed signal applications. Applications for the new CB series devices include graphics cards, field programmable logic, voltage regulation modules, point of load converters, and dc-dc converters in laptop, notebook and tablet PCs.

The CB series ferrite bead chip inductors offer an impedance range from 6 ohms to 2,700 ohms (at tolerances of 20 percent and 25 percent), with rated currents of 50mA to 6A, and DC resistances of 0.02 to 1.2 ohms.

Available in 0402 to 1812 case sizes, the CB inductors are supplied on 1,000 to 10,000 piece reels for high volume pick and place manufacturing equipment. The nickel barrier terminations provide excellent solder heat resistance even when using high temperature, Pb-free solder processes, according to the company.

At high frequencies, the CB series chip ferrite beads function as a resistor or attenuator, said the company, and lower frequencies that are desired are allowed to pass where higher frequencies are blocked and the energy released as heat. These devices are frequently used for EMI and RF suppression, power supply filtering, and isolation for logic devices. Typically, the beads are effective in applications across a wide frequency range from 1MHz to several hundred MHz.

The CB series is RoHS compliant with Pb-free 100% matte tin terminations. Typical pricing for the CB series is 5 cents each in volume quantities. Delivery is from stock to six weeks.
