Target photovoltaic inverter apps

The newest series of intelligent power modules (IPMs) from Powerex, the PV-IPM, is targeted specifically for emerging photovoltaic (PV) inverter applications.

These controller modules, available in three different circuit topologies for 50A or 75A/600V service (total 12 models, choice of pin or screw terminals), include a single-phase inverter circuit; single-phase inverter with one boost chopper; and a single-phase inverter with two boost choppers. The new series is optimized for power switching systems operating at up to 30kHz. At this frequency, the series has the lowest power loss of any IGBT-based module, according to the company, thereby producing the highest inverter efficiency for solar/PV systems. The series also contains a new control IC that further cuts the controller's power consumption and reduces radiated noise.

As with the company's standard series of IPMs, these new products provide under-voltage lockout for gate drive circuitry, and protect against short-circuit and over- temperature conditions.

Sample quantities of the PV-IPM are available from stock to 8 weeks at prices ranging from $138 to $190, depending on current/voltage rating.
