Freescale Semiconductor has introduced two new advanced power management ICs to help designers of telecoms and networking equipment reduce board space and system costs.

The mc34652 and mc34653 single-chip hot swap controllers offer load current control and protection from severe or permanent damage from power surge occurrences. Applications for the controllers include telecom and networking systems, servers, electronic circuit breakers and central office switching equipment.

The power management ICs also reduce the need for external components by incorporating power MOSFET applications. The integration can reduce board space by over 60 percent and can help assist designers in developing small, cost-effective boards.

The MC34652 and MC34653 have a maximum output current of 2A and 1A, respectively. The input voltage operation range for the MC34652 is from -15V to -80V while the MC3563 ranges from -39V to -74V.

The MC34652 is packaged in a narrow body 16-lead small outline integrated circuit (SOIC) at a suggested resale price of $2.15 in 1,000-piece quantities, while the MC34653 is housed in an eight-lead SOIC narrow body package at a suggested resale price of $1.82 in 1,000-piece quantities.
